New laptop: What to look for when choosing

Purpose of use

First, be clear about what you need the laptop for. Is it for current work, for studying, gamingor hard creative work? The purpose of use also determines the choice of individual components such as processor, graphics card, operating memory and storage.

Processor

The processor is the brain of a laptop and affects its overall performance. For everyday work such as writing documents, surfing the intwebs and watching movies, you will be fine with a processor such as Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3. If you plan to play demanding games or work with professional creative programs, you will need a more powerful processor such as Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7.

Graphic Card

Graphic card is crucial especially for gamers and users who work with graphics and video. For normal work, the integrated graphics card that comes with the processor will be enough. If you plan to play demanding games, you will need a dedicated graphics card with its own memory.

Residential memory (RAM)

Operational memory is used to store temporary data that the processor needs for its operation. For normal work, 8 GB of RAM will be sufficient. If you plan to run more demanding programs or play games, 16 GB or more is recommended.

Storage

Storage is used to store your data, programs and files. Two types of storage are most commonly used: SSD and HDD. SSDs are faster and quieter, but also more expensive. HDDs are slower and noisier, but more affordable and offer more capacity. An SSD with a 256GB capacity will be enough for your normal work. If you plan to store large amounts of data, you'll need more capacity.

Display
