Access Point (AP)
Access point, access point, is a device that is used to wirelessly connect to a network using Wi-Fi technology. Clients do not communicate directly, but through an access point, which means that they do not need to be in radio contact with each other. Access points can be implemented as a standalone device or as part of another device, for example routers, switches or repeaters, etc.
Access points are manufactured mainly as wireless devices, which are divided according to so-called radio standards. There are radio standards labeled a, b, g, n, ac. These standards specify the frequency band, the maximum speed and the physical layer.
- 802.11a - 5Ghz band, maximum speed 54Mbit/s
- 802.11b - 2.4Ghz band, maximum speed 11Mbit/s
- 802.11g - 2.4Ghz band, maximum speed 54Mbit/s
- 802.11n - 2.4 or 5Ghz band, maximum speed up to 600Mbit/s
- 802.11ac - 2.4 or 5Ghz band, maximum speed up to 1000Mbit/s
